Eligibility to Sponsor a Family Visa
A UK Family Visa allows eligible foreign nationals to join their family members in the UK for an extended period of 6 months or more. Depending on the relationship and circumstances, you can bring your:
- Spouse or partner
- Fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner
- Child
- Parent
- Relative needing long-term care
Sponsor Requirements
You must hold one of the following immigration statuses:
UK or Irish citizen
Holder of settled status
(ILR/Settled Status)
Holder of refugee status
or humanitarian protection
Who Can Apply
Hold a Valid UK Visa
- Your visa must allow dependants to join you
- Work, study, or business visas typically qualify
- Youth Mobility Scheme visas do not permit dependants
Be an EU/EEA/Swiss National with Pre-Settled Status
You must have resided in the UK before 1 January 2021
Be a UK or Irish National
Proof of citizenship or passport is required

UK Spouse Visa / Partner Visa
When applying for a UK Family Visa, both the UK-based sponsor and the family member must meet eligibility requirements.
Hold a Valid UK Visa
- Your visa must allow dependants to join you
- Work, study, or business visas typically qualify
- Youth Mobility Scheme visas do not permit dependants
Be an EU/EEA/Swiss National with Pre-Settled Status
You must have resided in the UK before 1 January 2021
Be a UK or Irish National
Proof of citizenship or passport is required
Have Settled Status in the UK
- This includes Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
- Settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme applies
Hold a Turkish Businessperson or Worker Visa
Valid for those under the Ankara Agreement terms
Have Refugee Status or Humanitarian Protection
Official documentation confirming status is needed

Fiancé Visa
The Fiancé Visa allows the fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner of an eligible UK-based person to come to the UK for up to 6 months to get married or enter into a civil partnership. This visa provides the opportunity to begin your life together in the UK.
Key Requirements
Applicants for the Fiancé Visa must meet the same English language and financial requirements as those for the Spouse/Partner Visa.

Level A1 on the CEFR scale
Financial Requirement
Combined annual income of at least £29,000
Pathway to Settlement

1. Fiancé Visa Period
Valid for up to 6 months to get married or enter a civil partnership -
2. Apply for a Spouse/Partner Visa
Stay in the UK for 2 years and 9 months after marriage -
3. Extend the Spouse/Partner Visa
Extend for another 2 years and 6 months -
4. Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
Apply for permanent residency after completing required time

Parent Visa
The Parent Visa, under the Family Visa scheme, allows a parent to join and care for their child in the UK. This visa enables the parent to live, work, and study in the UK while meeting their child’s needs.
Eligibility Requirements
1. Child Eligibility
The child must:
- Be under 18 years old or have been under 18 when the parent was first granted leave
- Not live an independent life (not married, in a civil partnership, or living independently)
The child must also live in the UK and meet one of the following:
Be a British or Irish citizen
Have settled status in the UK (e.g. ILR)
Hold pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme
Have lived in the UK for 7 continuous years
2. Parental Responsibility
Applicants must have sole or shared parental responsibility for the child.
Visa Duration and Settlement Pathway
1. Initial Visa Duration
2 years and 9 months
2. Extensions
Additional 2 years and 6 months
3. Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
After completing 5 years on a Parent Visa

Child Visa
The Child Visa, under the Family Visa scheme, allows a child to join their parent(s) in the UK. In some cases, children may not require a family visa if at least one parent holds Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). In such situations, the child may be eligible to apply directly for ILR.
Eligibility Requirement for a Child Visa
The requirements for a child visa depend on whether the child was born in the UK or outside the UK:
1. Children Born in the UK
Under 18 Years Old:
- They can be added as a dependant to their parent’s next visa application
- Alternatively, they may apply separately for a child visa
Over 18 Years Old:
- They can be included if financially and emotionally dependent on their UK-based parent
2. Children Born Outside the UK
- Must prove financial and emotional dependence on UK-based parent(s)
- Must not be married, in a civil partnership, or living independently
